Free ride on Dubai Metro and buses on Friday

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is to launch the fourth edition of the Public Transport Day on Friday under the theme: "Progress With Dubai", where the use of the Dubai Metro, public buses and water buses will be offered free of charge for Nol card holders.

Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, said that the initiative, staged on November 1 each year, is aimed at encouraging people to leave their personal vehicles at home and move over to public transport in Dubai.

The fourth edition of Public Transport Day comprises a host of events over and above the free use of the mass transit means of Dubai Metro, public buses, water buses and water taxis for Nol Card holders, including a marathon at Burj Khalifa, a used book fair, a showcase of RTA projects, and a procession of boats from Al Shindagha to Al Seef.

The RTA, in cooperation with the Dubai Health Authority, will also conduct medical checkups for interested riders of the Dubai Metro at the Dubai Healthcare City and Airport Terminal 3 stations, where tests on offer would include those for blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, body weight and height, in addition to there being a blood donation campaign at Al Ghubaiba Bus Station.

According to Mattar Al Tayer, the Public Transport Day initiative, use of public transport in Dubai has doubled from six per cent in 2006 to 12 per cent in 2012.
