Dubai’s authorities have issued a fresh warning to people spreading rumours online about gangs abducting women and stealing cars in desert areas in the emirate, saying such acts amount to a punishable crime.

Police said it was the second time in a year that social networks carry rumours warning people of gangs kidnapping women and stealing cars in desert areas, including Khawaneej, Warqa, Mirdif and the International City, which attract many people practicing their favorite hobbies of camping and riding cars and bikes.

“Dubai police again warn those who are spreading rumors which are totally untrue and baseless.

"These rumors are a crime under the electronic crime law in the UAE.

"Anyone caught spreading or re-publishing such rumours is committing a crime and will be punished.

"We call on the public not to believe such rumours,” police said on their social network pages.
