Gas cylinder prices in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah recorded have increased over the last few days according to Arabic daily Al Ittihad.

A medium-sized cylinder is now being sold for Dh95.

This has led to consumers demanding the intervention of the Ministry of Economy.

While distributors claim that the price of a gas cylinder in Ras Al Khaimah is less than in other emirates, the Department of Economic Development said the current prices have been fixed at meetings which are periodically held between the distributors and the body.

Ahmed Ali Al Shehi, a Ras Al Khaimah resident, says, “There is great exploitation by the distribution companies, which are raising prices each month.”

Ali Al Zaabi, another affected person, says the ongoing crisis of gas prices in Ras Al Khaimah dates back more than six years.

Mohamed Abdel Wahed, Director of the International Gas Company, says, “The price of gas in the Ras Al Khaimah is cheaper than in Sharjah, Ajman, Dubai and Fujairah, with the exception of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, where the government raised the prices.”

Meanwhile, the Department of Economic Development has warned gas distribution companies against the manipulation of cylinders.

The department has fixed the price of a small cylinder, which weighs 11kg at Dh45; a medium-sized, weighing 22kg at Dh90; and one weighing 44kg at Dh180.

Hamad Al Shamsi, Deputy Director General of the Department of Economic Development in Ras Al Khaimah called for the implementation of an agreement signed between the department and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company which would allow petrol stations to distribute gas cylinders to control rising prices.
