The 25-year-old Denzil Malcolm can’t stop grinning.

He walked away with a glittering gold bar weighing half a kilo, worth Dh70,000, on the second day of the ongoing Gitex Shopper Autumn.

“I still can’t believe it,” he said, holding the box that neatly stored the gold bar.

Denzil, who moved to Dubai a little over a year ago from Mangalore, works as a machine operator in a firm in Jebel Ali.

This is the first time he has won ever anything. “I am not lucky. I have never won even a lucky dip.”

Denzil had visited the Gitex on the opening day with his friends, and had bought a Lenovo laptop.

“I took a picture of the receipt and posted it on the Sweet app, and that’s how I won.”

He got a call the same night, but thought someone was playing a prank on him. “I couldn’t sleep well. I wanted to come here first thing in the morning and confirm before telling anyone.”

He told us that, right after he was done chatting with us, he was going to call home in Mangalore to tell his parents. “I didn’t want to tell them till I got it in my hands.”

Earning a basic salary of Dh1,500, Denzil is thrilled with his sparkling win. “I want to keep some part of it aside as cash, and the rest to make jewellery for my mother and kid sister.”
