Drivers cruising on road hard shoulders to overtake other vehicles will be fined Dh1,000 and have 12 black points added to their traffic record under the UAE’s modified traffic laws, according to a senior police officer.

Motorists in Abu Dhabi emirate committed 3,616 such offences in the first three months of 2016 despite the “great” risks of this offence, said Brigadier Khalifa Mohammed Al Khaili, Abu Dhabi’s traffic police deputy director.

“This offence is very dangerous…it carries great risks to the drivers and other road users as it causes serious accidents,” he told Emarat Alyoum Arabic language daily.

He said drivers caught involved in such offences would be fined Dh1,000, have 12 black points added to their traffic record and have their cars impounded for one month.

“In case the same driver commits this offence for the second time within a year, he will face more severe penalties,” he added.
