Hepatitis infections in the UAE decline

The UAE Health Department has reported a decline in the rates of infections by hepatitis (C). According to Dr. Mohammed Al Za’abi, consultative gastroenterology and liver transplantation this is due to medical advances and increasing health awareness in the community. 

He said, “Experts estimate the number of people infected by hepatitis in the UAE is about 37,000 to 92,000 patients, which represents 0.8% to 2% of the population".

According to a recent study conducted with 301 patients in Tawam Hospital, the success rates of recovery from the disease in the UAE are similar to international rates. 

Dr Zaher Al Kutbi, consultant gastroenterologist, stressed, “UAE has doctors with experience and efficiency for the treatment of viral hepatitis.” 

Dr. Salim Awadh, gastroenterologist consultant said, “New treatment will help to eliminate the virus, and will prevent progress fibrosis and liver failure, and reduces the need for transplants.”
