A cleaner working in a Dubai-based car rental company was recently honoured for his exemplary honesty when he returned a bag with Dh25,000 in cash to its rightful owner.

Twenty-year-old Shahan Sardar had found the cash under the mat of the driver’s seat.

Talking to ‘Emirates24|7’, he said, “I couldn’t have kept the money because I would have been found out. But, I had no bad intentions, and it didn’t even cross my mind.”

He promptly informed his supervisor of their Gharoud branch.

Shahan has been working in Dubai for the last eight months, and his family of eight brothers and sisters live in Pakistan.

An official of the Fast Rent A Car confirmed that their customer, who is a Saudi national, had returned the car after renting it for two days without checking it thoroughly.

“As part of our standard procedure, once the cars are returned, they are sent for cleaning,” explained a spokesperson for the company. “It is when our cleaner found the bag we informed the customer and returned his bag to him.”

In an e-mail, Saudi national Nasser Ghoneim expressed his immense gratitude to those involved in finding and returning his money. He recalled how he was already at the airport when he received a call informing him about his oversight. “Within 20 minutes of returning the car I was told about my loss. Since I was at the airport, the company dispatched an official to deliver my bag at terminal 1.”

Shahan was rewarded with a letter of appreciation and a cheque for Dh500 at their Abu Dhabi head office.

Shireen Bawani, marketing executive for Fast Rent A Car, said, “Any act of honesty will be rewarded and the worker will benefit from it.”
