For bag lovers nothing but an original will do.

When it comes to luxury goods, few cities in the world can match Dubai for authenticity, variety and price.

However, while brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Coach have a dedicated buyer marker here, for those just shy of the odd thousand dirhams to get that dream bag, a bargain offer is always on hand, or on the internet.

So how do you tell if the great deal you just sourced is an original or a fake.

We bag an expert, a fake and an original bag of two major brands and walk you through the process.

Responding to questions from Emirates 24|7, Louis Vuitton said, “In order to preserve our ability to efficiently fight against counterfeiting, we are unable to provide details on our manufacturing procedures or those used in counterfeit products.

“However, please note that Louis Vuitton does not stamp serial numbers on its products as means of identification or authentication.”

Our bag expert in the video does talk about a ‘bag code’. So what is that?

The statement adds: “Louis Vuitton does use manufacturing codes in our products; however, the presence of a number on a piece does not determine authenticity.”

Also, Louis Vuitton cannot comment on or guarantee the authenticity of products purchased elsewhere. Shopping through Louis Vuitton’s exclusive distribution network is the only way for customers to ensure that their Louis Vuitton product is authentic.

As for that other brand that is much in demand these days – Coach – also tells Emirates 24|7, “Since there are many determining factors to verify that your item is a Coach product, we are unable to make that determination with the registration number only.

Coach also adds: “We do not have Coach parties or offer our merchandise for sale through individuals, websites or catalogues at discounted prices.”

And warns, “If the item was purchased through an unauthorised source, we are not required to offer a determination regarding its authenticity.”
