Husband gives Dh75m cheque to wife to marry again, court hears

A wife testified in Dubai Court of Appeals on Monday that her husband gave her a cheque of Dh75million to ‘buy her silence’ after he married a second time.

The accused, an Asian, who was brought to court after the cheque bounced, alleged that he was forced to sign the cheque and that he had not mentioned a date on the leaf, even as the woman claimed that he offered the cheque so she would remain silent about his second marriage and take care of the kids, reported Emarat Al Youm.

She also claimed that he had given her the cheque in the presence of his friend, who was allegedly mediating to resolve the issue between the couple.

The Court of First Instance had earlier fined the man Dh5,000.

But prosecutors appealed the ruling and sought punishment according to Article 401 of the Federal Penal Code.

The Appeals Court has adjourned to November 24, to enable the defence to submit their documents.
