Indian baby with 2 heads clings to life

A woman in India has given birth to a girl with two heads in northern India on Wednesday, hospital sources have confirmed to Emirates 24|7.

“Yes this report is perfectly true that we have delivered a female baby having two heads on March 12, 2014, morning through a Caesarean operation,” Dr Ashish Sehgal from Cygnus JK Hindu Hospital in Sonipat, Haryana, about 60km from New Delhi, told this website in an emailed statement.

“The child has two heads and corresponding necks and spines,” he said adding that, “surprisingly, each side of body is being controlled by the corresponding head and brain.”

Dr Sehgal added that the girl is “healthy” so far. “She is presently alive and healthy. She was delivered at 11am IST and weighted around 3.4kg [at birth],” the hospital official noted.

“Yes both child and mother are doing well until now,” he told this website Tuesday morning (March 18), a week after the birth. But while the conjoined twins and the mother are doing well so far, the child is undergoing investigations to appraise her chances of survival.

“She, the child is undergoing investigations and the results about the internal anatomy and physiology will decide about her survival,” he said.

Strangely, the mother did not have any idea that she was carrying conjoined twins before she gave birth as she was too poor to afford an ultrasound.

“Parents are quite poor and are trying to accept this difficult situation, they too are worried about the future outcome of such a child,” Dr Sehgal said.

He noted that this was the first such case for not just Cygnus JK Hindu Hospital, but entire Northern Region of India.
