Indian community associations and citizens celebrated 69th Independence Day in full vigour with the Indian Consulate in Dubai and the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

The Indian Consulate premises in Dubai received nearly 1,500 guests attending the unfurling of the Indian national flag by Consul General Anurag Bhushan.

The Indian flag was also hoisted by the Indian community in Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain and in Kalba.

Every Independence Day is special, but this year has a special significance because of the imminent visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the UAE - the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the UAE in 34 years.

Consul General Anurag Bhushan informed that though the organising committee is making the best possible arrangements for convenience of visitors including shuttle services from vantage Metro stations to the venue, in view of weather conditions, it is suggested to dress suitably and not to carry cameras, handbags, foodstuffs, etc, as these will not be allowed inside the stadium.

Blood donation camps, cultural programmes and other entertainment events were also held to commemorate the Indians heroic fight against colonial rule that lasted for 200 years, before the country gained independence on August 15, 1947.
