Shocked by the suicide of a financially stricken family in Ras Al Khaimah recently, an Indian businessman has come forward and set up a fund to aid children’s education in the UAE.

The fund will be managed by the Indian Community Welfare Committee (ICWC) that functions under the Indian Consulate in Dubai.

Siddharth Balachandran, Chairman of the India Club in Dubai and a businessman, yesterday made the first donation of Dh500,000 and urged more businessmen to join hands in coming to the aid of those badly affected by the financial crisis.

“The idea behind such an initiative is to ensure that no Indian child in Dubai and the rest of UAE should discontinue his or her education, due to financial instability," he said

According to ICWC statistics, already about 30 families had approached the consulate for financial help. “We managed to help and assist most of them.

Three cases are still pending. These are families where the women and children continue to suffer,” said K Kumar of ICWC.

Balachandran also called upon other businessmen to join in this initiative.

“There are so many entrepreneurs who can afford to do whatever little they can towards this cause. It was really shocking to read about the circumstances that led to their suicides,”he said.

Meanwhile, the committee has decided to write to the principals of all Indian schools, requesting them to report to the consulate lists of names of students who have not been paying fees on time.
