A group of Non Resident Indians (NRIs) based in the UAE are giving away wheelchairs and sewing machines to 27 physically- challenged widows in the south Indian state of Kerala.

The expats represent the Vadakkancherry region of Trichur district and say this is part of their Onam celebrations this year.

Onam is the harvest festival celebrated by Keralites all over the world

“We are not a big organisation, but nearly 1,000 families from the Vadakkancherry region part of the charity initiative,” Chandra Prakash Edamana, one of those involved in the initiative, said.

The NRIs from Vadkakkancherry also try to help sick people with their treatment, poor girls who have no money for their marriages, flood victims, dialysis for diabetic patients and have even donated chairs to a village library.

A Facebook group of the community has about 1,700 members, and community news is shared.

They also share information about the needy.

An NRI working in Abu Dhabi died of heart attack and his family received Rs100,000 from the group.
