Indian loses limbs after falling sick

An Indian man has lost both his hands and legs following a month-long ordeal with what started as mild fever.

The incident occurred four months after 24-year-old Nitin Shah from the South Indian state of Kerala came to Dubai, to work in a construction company.

Initially it was a flu-like fever and Shah hoped to recover with a dose of Panadol. But, when the fever continued even after a week, Shah was taken to a hospital. The infection started spreading to his hands and legs.

After about three weeks of treatment, Shah’s condition completely deteriorated.

He was shifted to the intensive care unit and doctors finally advised that his hands and legs had to be amputated.

His family members arrived in Dubai and took special permission to shift him to a hospital in Kerala. But there was no hope.

Today Shah, who was a popular volleyball player in his hometown, is undergoing post-operative treatment in an Indian hospital, following amputation of both his hands and legs.

Shah is still unable to believe that what started as a mild fever has left him disabled for life.

Shah was the only hope for his family, who like several others had borrowed money to send him to the UAE to earn a living.

Today, the family faces debt having mortgaged all the property they owned, including their only house, for Shah`s treatment.

T K Hashim, a Dubai-based lawyer is now trying to help the family.

An investigation is on by the Ministry of Health in the UAE to ascertain what lead to Shah’s current situation.
