Individual sponsors of absconding workers will be compensated

Sponsors of absconding domestic workers will be financially compensated henceforth, according to Dubai Public Prosecution of Naturalisation and Residency Department.

Judge Ali Humaid bin Khatam, Head, Dubai Public Prosecution of Naturalisation and Residency Department, said sponsors will be paid Dh5,000.

The amount will be taken from the fine of Dh50,000 that will be levied against the new sponsor who hires those absconding workers.

However, sponsors whose domestic staff including drivers, gardeners and farmers have left them must first duly inform the competent authorities about 'missing' workers.

Later they must submit an application, along with the verdict issued against the 'illegal' sponsor by a court, to the Dubai Public Prosecution of Naturalisation and Residency requesting for compensation.

Bin Khatam said compensation would be made only if the absconding workers and their new 'illegal' sponsors are arrested.

This rule comes uner Law No. 7 of 2007 on entry and residence of foreigners.

Bin Khatim said the move aims to compensate sponsors as they would have incurred loss in bringing and hiring those workers.

He, however, denied specifying the number of such people who could already claim such compensation.
