Inquiry starts into construction site accident

Two workers died and 9 were injured after scaffolding of under-construction building collapsed on Dubai-Al Ain Road

A major accident at a construction site in Dubai Land area, near Dubai Outlet Mall, at about 10.30am on Saturday morning left numerous workers in a state of panic.

At least two workers have been reported dead and nine others injured in the accident. The injured were airlifted to Rashid Hospital.
At least 20 ambulances were seen rushing towards the site at the Al Ain Road and Dubai Bypass junction even as a helicopter was pressed into rescue service, a witness said.
The scaffolding of the under-construction building fell apart, raising concerns about the safety of workers at the site.
Brigadier Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, head of CID at Dubai Police, said bad weather contributed to the Dubai accident.
“We are carrying out checks but think there were mistakes in the scaffolding on the upper floors of the building,” he said. “Strong winds also contributed to the collapse. The municipality has started an investigation into the incident.”
Police cordoned off the entire area to ensure smooth traffic flow after about 300 construction workers from neighbouring construction sites crowded at the accident spot.

An Asian worker was killed and three were injured when a massive scaffold they were erecting at a building under construction in Abu Dhabi collapsed on Thursday.

The man was buried under a large pile of timber and steel bars while three others were pulled out with injuries.

"They suffered from light to medium injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment…the other worker died on the spot,” Alkhaleej daily said.

It is very sad when contractors attempt to cut cost often see the employees and their families paying in the end. What is interesting is why were they allowed to use frame scaffolding to do such a job especially when all the lifts are planked off. It is sad that workers always think it won't happen to me, every rope has an end.

Sadly enough a phenomenon that we keep on encountering across the region. Poor scaffold erection, no proper tagging etcera, inexperienced scaffolders, poor supervision. Contractor's putting up huge banners 'Safety First' is unfortunately not enough to save lives! It's about time a third party starts to enforce site safety and stop contractors from cutting costs on safety.

Has this been happening a lot and is it the immigrants who pay with their lives when they are not keeping the safety standards where they should be?Just wondering?
