Motorists who overtake on hard shoulder will face up to one month in jail, according to Abu Dhabi Police.

Brigadier Hussein Ahmed Al Harthy, Director, Directorate of Traffic and Patrols, Abu Dhabi Police, said, drivers will face severe penalties for overtaking on the hard shoulder.

He said the decision is in accordance with Federal Traffic Law No 21 of 1995. Article 57 stipulates one month imprisonment for such a violation apart from incurring 10 black points – six points for violation of overtaking on the hard shoulder and  four points for not giving way for emergency, police and public service vehicles.

Brigadier Al Harthy said , overtaking on the hard shoulder is a dangerous act putting road users’ lives at risk.

He stressed that hard shoulder is meant for use during emergencies and accidents and should be always left free for ambulances and other civil defence vehicles.

He added that about 4,930 such violations were recorded by radars and surveillance cameras on Abu Dhabi’s internal and external roads in the first four months of this year.

He reminded motorists that cameras in Abu Dhabi city’s intersections record hard shoulder overtaking offences, red light jumping, incorrect lane changing, speeding, taking wrong U-turns, etc.
