The Supreme Traffic Council of the UAE has recommended jail for reckless drivers - especially those who exceed the road speed limit by 50 per cent or more.

One of the recommendations is that those who are caught speeding by 50 per cent more than the maximum traffic speed limit could be jailed for up to 24 hours, said Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Assistant Commander-in-Chief, Dubai Police, and Head of Federal Traffic Council.

Maj-Gen. Al Zafin said 15 per cent of deaths in traffic accidents occur because of reckless driving, and added that stern punishment can reduce such fatalities.

As per latest statistics, majority of motorists involved in accidents are aged between 24 and 30.

Maj-Gen. Al Zafin was speaking at an open session titled ‘ Leaders at your service’, organized by Dubai Police.

The meeting was also attended by Major-General Khamis Mattar Al Mazina, Commander-in-Chief, Dubai Police.
