JLT Tamweel Tower blaze Impact: An apartment owner alleges harassment by tenant

An apartment owner in the 34-storey Tamweel Tower in Jumeirah Lakes Towers community has alleged she is being constantly harassed by her tenant, who isn’t just seeking return of his cheques, but even refund of rent from the day he was forced out of his abode due to the fire.

“My tenant has been bothering me for some time now. I did tell him that I would return his cheques, but he keeps on sending me messages, asking for his cheques and return of rent for the 13 day for November,” the landlord, who wished not to be named, told ‘Emirates24”7’.

Although her apartment was unscathed by the fire, the landlord decided to refund the rent since the building was uninhabitable.

“My apartment wasn’t damaged by the fire. But as residents can’t move in I am morally bound to return my tenant’s rent cheques.”

The landlord added: “I have asked my tenant to settle his bills first and bring the receipts. Since I know that it won’t be easy for him to settle his Dewa bills, I did suggest that I would keep his 13-day rent with me and adjust it with the unpaid bills. But he remains adamant that I return him all his money.”

Her two-bed furnished apartment was leased for Dh120,000 per year.

“I have no option, but to bear a loss of at least Dh120,000 next year as it may take over a year for Tamweel Tower to be restored,” the owner said.

“In no way I will be keeping the rent cheques given to me by my tenant if he wishes not to stay in the apartment. By God’s grace my apartment hasn’t been damaged, but I have informed him that if he doesn’t wish to continue I will return him the remaining rent and the cheques,” the owner had said.
