The much anticipated link from Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) to Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed (SMBZ) Road is to open this Friday, October 10th, announced the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The road is the latest in a series of road improvements in the popular community, which has been plagued by traffic congestion.

The link, which is named as Qarn Al Sabkha Road, will provide direct access to yet another major highway in the emirate, linking Sheikh Zayed Road at the JLT junction (Interchange 5.5) with SMBZ Road nearby Al Houdh R/A.

“The opening of Qarn Al Sahbkha Road will provide smooth traffic flow for JLT, Jumeirah Island and Jumeirah Park by linking them with SMBZ Road.

“Moreover, the traffic is set to flow smoothly from Sheikh Zayed Road towards these communities, thanks to a key tunnel opened last March,” Maitha bin Udai, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA said.

At a later stage, the remaining bridges at the intersection of Al Saada Road with Qarn Al Sabkha Road will be opened, she added.

“Phase II of this project will be opened by the end of March 2015 where Al Saadah Road will be linked with Ibn Battuta Mall district, besides completing some bridges and roads in the neighbourhood which will mainly serve JLT, the Gardens, Furjan, Jumeirah Islands, and Juemirah Park by linking them with Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road,” Maitha continued.

Last year, the community was transformed with the addition of a couple of new or improved exits, entries, bridges and road links.

“We anticipate travel time for getting in and out of the existing developments to significantly reduce due to replacing the at-grade junctions, which have limited capacity, into free-flow junctions besides providing a totally new link to Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road to better distribute the traffic, especially during peak hours,” said Maitha end 2013.

She also revealed that Al Khail First Road would be extended to Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road, Discovery Gardens and Ibn Battuta Mall and would include a link to Jafza in the future.

“The construction of the project is a kind of practical implementation of RTA’s plans for improving the infrastructure of roads and public transport network in Dubai, and developing integrated solutions for roads and transit networks such that they become safe for users, matching to the sweeping development plans, and capable of addressing the needs of demographic and urban expansion,” she elaborated.
