K9 calamity: Dog torn apart at Dubai Pet Show

Each pet is ultimately the responsibility of its handler throughout the event, say organisers

A poodle was mauled to death by an American Staffordshire Terrier at the Dubai Pet Show this weekend.

According to a report in a local daily, the mood at the annual pet exhibition and show turned from merriment to misfortune as the bigger dog locked its jaws on the poodle, shook it and then tossed it in the air.

According to an eyewitness quoted by local daily 7Days, the poodle was already dead by the time it landed on the ground. A little girl, aged 10 or 11, who was holding the poodle on a leash while this happened, started wailing while, according to the eyewitness, the Staffordshire Terrier’s owner and his children simply walked off after the incident.

“It was just horrific. My children have got to live with having seen this,” the lady eyewitness was quoted as saying.

The event, sponsored by Pedigree and Whiskas, was in its 24th year. A spokeswoman for the organisers was quoted as saying: “We are greatly saddened at the loss of the family’s pet dog and extend our sympathy to them all. While every precaution is taken to ensure a calm environment, each pet is ultimately the responsibility of its handler throughout the event.”

The pet show was held at the Sevens Stadium and was reportedly attended by over 35,000 animal lovers.

Stephanie, you claim to be an animal lover yet you wish death upon the dog that was just acting like a territorial dog? The owners should be prosecuted for this, not the dog, as it is ultimately their responsibility for their dog's actions.

Gremlin, you're a bully, it could have been your child, why do you say it's just a dog.

Im in Pit bull rescue and we have a 4 foot rule for a reason and thats the main one we just dont want to risk it. That is also why I absolutely despise those leashes. Ever event we say they are not allowed and at ever event there are at least 10. If you dont watch your dog you going to get in trouble. It was so not the staffies fault and he should not be killed over this. His owner could have walked away to but the poolde should have been with its owner.

It was a very sad news...the poodles name was Pluto and even my pet dog's name was Pluto whom I have lost just nine months ago so I can understand the owners feelings. But putting down Trip (staffordshire) won't bring Pluto back. I know what it is to lose a dog. So I wish Trip is not put down. And I am very sad about Pluto.

In AZ, yes that is a felony and the owner WOULD be facing charges. The pit bull would be dead, thankfully as well!

Both dogs were on a leash, the Staffordshire on a short one and the poodle on an extendable. The poodle approached the Staffordshire, who snapped and bit the poodle. The Staffordshire's owner had to pry open the dog's mouth to remove the poodle, it was not tossed in the air. He stayed behind to deal with the situation. Both owners at fault, Staffordshire should have been muzzled, poodle owner should have taken better care.

Unbelievable some of the comments from bully people. A dog was killed and it's a "unfortunate" incident and it's "just a dog"?

Stephanie, as a dog lover as you claim to be, you don't seem to even be able to make the difference between the breeds. You bring pitbulls in discussion when they wheren't involved in the matter. I agree that the owners should be responsible and should know that their dogs aren't exactly friendly with the others and should take measures. But I cannot agree that the dog in this case should also be put down.

I support Danushke... it's not the saddest thing of the year... it's unfortunate, thats all... Stephanie, you need to calm down... criminal charges? LOL. You crack me up... that'll teach a poddle to mess with a terrier.

Excuse me... the owner and his children simply 'walked off'? Why aren't criminal charges being filed against them? Sorry, but no animal lover I know will ever attend this event again. That includes me. Appalling lack of accountability on the part of the owners of this awful dog that is being allowed to live and probably do the same thing again. Pit bulls are freaks -- lucky it wasn't a small child it set its sights on.

Unfornate incident but perhaps not the saddest this year. Its just a dog and let us worry more about preventing human killings around us.
