Abu Dhabi has opened a Dh830 bridge just outside the capital to traffic following two years of work on the project as part of an overall infrastructure development blueprint to cope with a steady population growth in the emirate.

The Abu Dhabi Municipality said all but one lane on the Mafraq causeway are now open to traffic and the bridge would be in full operation later this month.

“The bridge has a capacity to accommodate 24,000 moving cars per hour and it will actively contribute to easing traffic congestion in both directions,” said Abdullah Al Shamsi, acting director of the infrastructure section.

Abu Dhabi, the largest UAE emirate, is building at least 30 bridges and causeways as part of a major road development plan to cope with a steady population growth and expansion in the city’s geographical area. The plan is part of the emirate’s ambitious Vision 2030 that projects the population to nearly triple to three million by the end of the plan.
