Killer's relatives offer Dh12 million to victim's family in Sharjah

The relatives of a student at Sharjah University convicted of killing a Kuwaiti student offered KD one million (Dh12 million) as diya (blood money) to the victim’s family to pardon the defendant and stop a sentence for his execution.

The lawyer for the victim’s family rejected the cheque presented at Sharjah’s Court of Appeals on Tuesday and demanded cash.

He also rejected a KD100,000 (Dh1.2 million) cheque for himself and demanded in court that all the funds must be paid in cash.

A Court of First Instance had sentenced the defendant and another student to death after they were convicted of raping and murdering that student.

Newspapers said the second defendant had not yet reached a diya agreement with the victim’s family and could be executed in case blood money is not paid.

They said the judge decided to adjourn hearings to next month for a possible diya agreement between the victim’s relatives and the two defendants.
