The minimum age of female domestic workers for the Gulf region for employment has been raised by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) to 23, ‘Divaina’ newspaper reported.

It has been increased to 25 in the case of Saudi Arabia.

Measures have been taken by the SLBFE to provide an extensive training to women who are going abroad for employment and prior to their departure; the bureau has made it compulsory for all Middle East-bound workers to obtain National Vocational Level III qualifications.

SLBFE said that to ensure the safety of domestic workers going to Middle East, the new terms would also be introduced to employment contracts in-line with the laws of labour receiving countries as well as Sri Lankan law.

The rule that female domestic workers in all other countries have to be 21 years plus has been continuing since 2010.
