The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) opened the main traffic diversion on Al Wasl Road, nearby Al Safa Park, stretching about half a kilometer and maintaining the same number of lanes to avoid disruption of traffic flow.

The detour will set the ground for commencing construction works on Phase II of the Dubai Water Canal.

Maitha bin Udai, CEO of RTA Traffic and Roads Agency, said: “Dubai Canal construction works are progressing according to the approved timeline. So the planned traffic diversion on Al Wasl Road, which includes the traffic flow coming from the (Jumeirah 3 and Al Safa 1) to the (Jumeirah 2 and Al Wasl) and vice-a-versa to the temporary traffic diversion has been constructed with the same number of lanes, and fitted with the required traffic safety means such as traffic signals, directional signage, cautionary lights and concrete barriers.”

“Works for laying utility conduits underneath the planned Canal (mainland side) have also started. Construction works on the bridge on Al Wasl Road in the direction of Abu Dhabi will also begin, once the traffic movement is shifted directly to the traffic diversion," she added.

Water Canal Project is divided into three phases – Phase 1 includes the construction of bridges across the Water Canal on the Sheikh Zayed Road comprising eight lanes in each direction. These bridges rise eight meters above water level, enabling free marine navigation in the canal 24/7, besides undertaking several improvements in the networks of main roads intercepting the course of the Canal.

Phase II includes construction of bridges on Jumeirah Road and Al Wasl Road comprising three lanes in each direction of the Jumeirah Road, and two lanes in each direction of Al Wasl Road, in addition to a ramp from Al Wasl Road to Hadiqa Road in the direction of the Sheikh Zayed Road.

Phase III covers drilling of a 3.2km-long canal, filling an island in the sea, building a marine wall around the island to enable preparing the sand beach, building yachts and water bus marine, and constructing three eye-catching footbridges.
