Major accident on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road

A major accident is being reported on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road, going towards Abu Dhabi.

Commuters have been calling in to report that the accident, which occurred at around 12.15pm near Times Square towards Abu Dhabi, has resulted in tailbacks on both sides of the Sheikh Zayed Road.

The status of those involved in the accident has not yet been ascertained even as an eyewitness said a BMW car is said to have been badly damaged. A BMW car and a minibus were involved in the accident.

The BMW was driven by an Emirati woman who was badly injured and taken to hospital. The minibus was driven by an African national.

Police and paramedic personnel were on the spot within a few minutes of the accident.

Long trail of vehicles are being reported from both sides of the road, one because of the accident and the other because of  drivers slowing down to see the accident.

“I have been stuck here for the last 20 minutes,” says Alwin Desouza who has been driving towards Discovery Gardens.

According to some of the eyewitnesses the car has been completely damaged.

Dubai Police confirmed the incident in a tweet that read, “An accident has been reported on SZR after Al Safa bridge towards Jebel Ali 12:13,”

Another accident has also been reported earlier during the day at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Road resulting in a traffic jam.

A separate tweet by Dubai police said the incident occurs at around 10:25am towards Sharjah.
