Fire hazards continue to plague Sharjah with another major fire gutting a number of shops in the Al Ghuwair market in Rolla, Sharjah.

The fire which broke out early in the morning gutted at least ten shops – mostly run by Asian traders from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh - and millions of dirhams worth of goods.

“Several shops are gutted in the fire. Ten shops owned by Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshi traders have been totally destroyed. It is one of the busiest markets in Sharjah’s Rollah area and the most of the shops were dealing in textiles,” said one trader from the market.

“The fire started at around 2 am continued for a few hours and the Civil Defence team from Sharjah took almost four hours to stop it. By early morning, the fire was brought under control, but even now they are not allowing people inside,” added another trader.

“We cannot open the shops as the market is now in a total mess. Ten shops have lost everything and other stock has also been damaged,” he added

Recently, a high-rise building in the Al Nahda area caught fire, causing serious damage for residents.
