A Pakistani man is accused of causing the death of a Bengali woman who was his tenant.
The woman died due to serious injuries she sustained after the ceiling collapsed and the water tank in the kitchen fell over her in February 2.
MHM told the Dubai Misdemeanour Court that he had rented a house in Al Muteena area, behind Marco Polo Hotel, three years back.
He occupied the ground floor and rented out the first floor.
However, six months later the then owner sold the house to an Emirati, TMH.
MHM signed a new lease contract with the new owner, which is still valid.
But on January 31, the tenant, occupying the first floor, went on a holiday and requested MHM to lease it out to someone else for three months.
The same day, a Bengali couple accepted to rent the first floor for Dh2,500 for three months.
A month later, on February 2, MHM heard a loud crash and saw water flowing down into his room from the first floor. On rushing up, he found the Bengali woman trapped between the kitchen table and the water tank and covered with asbestos bars.
He immediately called the emergency as he could not pull her out of the debris.
Meanwhile, TMH told the court that he had bought this particular house along with an adjacent building from two families without actually checking their interiors.
He claimed the tenants never asked him for maintenance and so he never carried out any.
The case has been adjourned for the defence to submit their memorandum.
