A 34-year-old citizen has drowned on the beach of Umm Al Quwain while playing volleyball with friends.

Police said the man swam to fetch the ball which drifted away deeper into the sea, but he drowned as the high waves pulled him deeper into the sea.

The UAE citizen couldn’t swim back to the shore due to severe water currents, it said.

One of his friend attempted to rescue him but he failed. Then a third friend first rescued the second man and then managed to pull the first one also but he had fell unconscious.

An ambulance immediately transported the drowned man to a hospital but he died on the way.

The investigation is still underway into the incident.

Umm Al Quwain Police cautioned beach-goers wear a life jacket and avoid swimming during high waves.

Parents have also been advised not to leave children alone while playing in the sea.
