An Arab man in his 50s plunged to his death from the fifth level in a building in Sharjah and police said they were investigating if a criminal act is involved in the death.

The man, identified as SA, died on impact after hitting the ground in Al Qassimiya neighbourhood on Saturday morning, the semi-official daily Al Ittihad said.

It was the latest in a series of fatal incidents involving falling of children and adults from high floors in buildings in the northern emirate.

Another drowning in Sharjah

Yet another drowning incident has led Sharjah Police to issue a warning to the public of swimming in dangerous areas.

Police received an alert of a swimmer missing at about 8pm on Friday at Al Khan beach.

Rescue team recovered the body, which has been transferred to the forensic laboratory to investigate the cause of death.

The deceased is believed to be in his twenties.

This is the second such incident in two weeks.

Earlier, a 50-year-old Sudanese, who worked at a camel farm, drowned off the beach waters.

Colonel Sultan Abdullah Al Khayal, Director of Media and Public Relations Department, said there has been an increase in the number of drowning cases in the recent past as public ignore warnings and venture into danger zones.

He added that rescue teams and beach patrols cannot alone prevent people from drowning. It’s up to swimmers to abide by instructions and pay heed to warnings.
