A 35-year-old jobless Emirati has stolen Dh1.7 million from his grandfather’s treasury box with the help of two others who claimed to be CID officers.

They tied up and locked the housemaid, the Dubai Criminal Court heard on Sunday.

Mattar Ghaleb Mohammed, 77, retired Emirati, complained on March 24 that Dh1.7m was missing from his treasury box in his house at Al Satwa and accused his grandson BMK with stealing as he was the only one who knew about the treasury box and the money in it.

Mattar told the prosecution that at around 11am on that day he heard calls for help from one of the rooms of his house and found the maid Khairia Amah Sultan in the room which was locked from outside.

Khairia, 25, Sri Lankan, told the prosecution that someone entered the house and claimed to be a CID officer. He then tied her hands and legs with plastic ropes and locked the door of the room from outside.

Issam Abbad, 34, policeman, testified that on checking the victim’s house, he found plastic ropes and that the treasury box was missing.

He testified that BMK planned the theft and supplied the other two HJH, 34, jobless Emirati, and YAS, 28, a Yemeni carpenter, with a video recording of the his grandfather’s house, including the whereabouts the treasury box and the entrances and exits of the house. He planned with them the timing for the operation.

BMK watched the area from outside while the other two climbed the fence and executed the theft.

Searching the house of the suspects police confiscated Dh927,000 in the possession of HJH, testified Abbad.

HJH has confessed to police that they took the treasury box and broke it in the desert and divided the amount among themselves.

Omar Hassan, 25, policeman testified that Dh374,000 were found in the possession of YAS who confessed that he entered the house alone after the victim left the house and claimed to the housemaid that he was a CID officer.

He said he tied the maid and locked her inside, then moved to the victim’s room and took the treasury box and with the help of the second accused they took it out through the opening of the window-AC hole.

Police lifted the fingerprint of the left hand thumb of YAS from the wall near the place where the treasury box was kept.

BMK has confessed before police to agreeing with the other two accused for stealing from his grandfather and that the confiscated amount was part of his grandfather’s money.

The Dubai Prosecution has filed a case against all three for theft using a weapon and restricting the freedom of a person.
