The Premier League and the Stamford Bridge faithful are about to find out if Frank Lampard is the Blues version of Steven Gerrard – never to play for any other club but Liverpool – or a Robin Van Persie, no qualms about moving on.

After reports have emerged that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is not in favour of Chelsea’s over-30s, which puts captain John Terry, 31, Frank Lampard, 34, and Ashley Cole, 31, all in a direct line of fire, Roberto Di Matteo has underscored that message.

Di Matteo has now warned Lampard that he cannot expect to play every week.

Lampard was an unused sub in Saturday’s win at Arsenal and has not started Chelsea’s last three games.

Di Matteo said: “As much as no one likes to be on the bench, I hope Frank understands. I try to use the whole squad.”

That Abramovich would let Champions League final hero Didier Drogba go should send a clear message.

Paris St-Germain are said to be ready to move for Cole.

Lampard, however, could easily get first team action over at Manchester United, who are struggling to find their feet in midfield.

Manchester United could also be ready to swoop for Cole as Sir Alex is in desperate need of defensive re-enforcements.

Unless Lampard is, of course, Chelsea’s Liverpool version of Steven Gerrard?

Which means a move to LA Galaxy is more likely.
