A 50-year-old Bangladeshi suffering memory loss and other diseases has been bed ridden at Rashid Hospital in Dubai and his brother in the United States is refusing to take him, telling the hospital angrily to keep him in.

A hospital official said Zaki Mohammed Fardous has been received treatment for diabetes, anemia, myopia and other diseases but that he still suffers from amnesia.

Fardous had been found by Dubai police who brought him to the hospital in a bad shape before it published his name and photograph on the internet.

“One relative identified him and provided us with the contact number of his wife in Bangladesh and his brother in the United Stat4es,” said Aisha Al Kindi, head of the patients’ affairs section at the hospital.

She said the hospital could not contact his wife because her phone appears to be out of service while his brother refused to take him.

“The problem is that information we received from the immigration department in Dubai showed he left the UAE in 2000 and we wonder how he has returned to the country without his name being registered with the local authorities,” she said.

Quoted by Emirat Alyoum Arabic language daily, Dr Mohammed Sabita of Rashid Hospital said the management had tried many times to persuade his brother to take him or even provide his address in Bangladesh.

“He rejected all our efforts…the last time he replied angrily that his family considers Firdous a lost man and no longer wants him….he then said ‘keep him with you because we don’t want him,” he said.

He said the Bangladeshi consulate in Dubai has also failed to response to many letters sent by the hospital asking for its help.

“This patient’s condition is now almost stable and he no longer needs to stay in the hospital…he has the right to get out and return home…but we will not let him out as long as nobody comes forward and receive him.”
