Mawaqif clearance needed for driving licence renewal

Motorists seeking to renew their driving licence or car registration will now need to produce a clearance certificate from Mawaqif under a new rule issued by the Abu Dhabi traffic police, a newspaper reported on Sunday.

The new law is intended to ensure drivers have paid all fines issued by Mawaqif for offending drivers after the company, which is affiliated to the Department of Transport, linked its services to the traffic police in late 2011.

“Those who want to renew their driving licence or car registration now need to present a clearance certificate from Mawaqif to the traffic police in order to have their transaction processed,” the semi-official daily Alittihad.

It said drivers would not need to bring that certificate in case they pay all fines issued by Mawaqif at the traffic police department.
