A white minivan has caught fire on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, with authorities on the scene trying to contain the blaze.

The fire, which broke out in front of Global Village, has engulfed the minivan, with Civil Defence and the Dubai Police already on the scene.

Dubai Police tweeted details about the fire, stating on its official Twitter account: “There is a vehicle on fire on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road before the Global Village in the direction of the emirate of Sharjah.  There is heavy traffic on the highway due to this.”

Twitter user, E-walls Studio, posted in an image of the burning vehicle, which shows both the front and the rear tyres ablaze with the trunk and the front engine engulfed in flames. Meanwhile, black charred marks are visible across the body of the car.

According to the Twitter user, the minivan was completely engulfed when they passed the scene at 1pm; the fire reportedly broke out 20 minutes earlier as per another eye witness.

It is still unclear what caused the fire or whether someone was injured in the incident.

However, drivers are reporting major traffic and tailbacks on this artery, adding to the already heavy commute on Thursday afternoon, ahead of the weekend.

Commuters are advised to use Al Khail or Sheikh Zayed Road instead until the fire is contained.

Traffic at Standstill: Heavy vehicle crash on Dubai's Emirates Road

Traffic has come to a standstill on the new Emirates Road, with a heavy vehicle involved in an accident.

Nearly two lanes are reportedly blocked on the former bypass road, at the intersection, towards the Jebel Ali exit.

Dubai Police vehicles were spotted on the scene, with the authority confirming the accident on Twitter, stating: “A heavy vehicle has been involved in an accident on Emirates road, near the Jebel Ali intersection There is obstruction to traffic.”

According to eye witnesses on the scene, the Jebel Ali exit has been blocked to traffic, which has resulted in jams as drivers are being forced to find alternative routes.

It is still unclear what caused the accidents with the goods trailer.
