An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted Kaki city in the southern province of Bushehr Monday morning, Iranian state agency Irna has reported.

The country has been put on a “pay attention” category by seismologists for the next 48 hours even as there have been no immediate reports of damage to property or loss of lives.

The UAE, which was earlier affected by last month’s couple of quakes in Iran, did not feel any tremors from this morning’s earthquake in Kaki.

The Seismological centre affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University registered the quake at 06:58 hours local time (07:28 UAE time; 02:28GMT).

The quake’s epicentre was in an area located at 51.71 degrees longitude and 28.42 degrees latitude, according to Irna.

Last month, two earthquakes in Iran shook the UAE and other countries in the Middle East. A powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake had struck Southern Iran on April 9, with UAE residents experiencing the ground shake under their feet due to tremors and aftershocks of that quake.

Then, a week later, on April 17, another, more powerful quake of 7.8 magnitude hit the Iran-Pakistan border, with several buildings being evacuated due to the tremors felt in the UAE.

Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth’s crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating, according to Irna.
