In yet another incident of parental neglect, two children, including a toddler, were left unattended in a car in Dubai late Monday afternoon around 4pm.

The incident occurred in Al Garhoud, close to Al Tayer Motors. A baby boy who was around six to eight months old was left unattended in the front seat of a salon car. Another toddler aged around two was on the rear seat of the car.

Hearing the child cry, a crowd soon gathered near the car. “The parents are not here. The children are here for almost five minutes now,” one bystander told ‘Emirates24|7’.

When this reporter reached the spot, the child continued to lie, placed on a plastic sheet, unattended, in the driver’s seat, with his head facing the steering.

Just before the police could be called, the mother came running out of an office, apologised and took the child from this reporter’s hand and drove away.

Earlier this year, police had to issue a strict warning against parents leaving their kids unattended in cars, after an Emirati couple lost their 19 month-old baby after they left her in their car.

Colonel Khaled Obaid Saeed bin Shamsi, Director-General of the General Directorate of Civil Defence in Sharjah had issued a warning to parents leaving their children in cars even with the air-conditioner on.

Police warn of gas poisoning in running cars

Media reports had also quoted Colonel Dr Rashid Mohammad Borshid, Acting Director of the Capital Police Directorate, urging  parents to safety standards

Most of the accidents, according to him, are a result of miscalculated and unintended negligence by parents or attendants. “This negligence has led to children suffocating inside the car, because the heat produces carbon dioxide gas in the car and toxic gases are additionally emitted from the seats,” a local media report said quoting Colonel Dr Borshid.
