An Arab woman with three Emirati children died after undergoing an operation at a stomach Sharjah hospital to lose weight and doctors said post-surgery complications led to her demise.

A visiting French surgeon performed the operation at Qassimi Hospital, where she had been advised to have that surgery to reduce her weight although she did not exceed 96 kg.

Her mother said Samah had suffered from knee pain when she was advised by doctors to undergo that surgery in defiance of warnings by her family. She told the Arabic language daily Alittihad that the operation involved cutting off part of stomach, which later led to complications.

“She felt severe pains and had to be take to the operation room again…doctors said she had some complications after the first surgery.”

She said Samah was later sent to Mafraq hospital in Abu Dhabi, where she had stomach treatment. “Two weeks ago, she died after she lost much weight…she was only 40 kg when she passed away,” she said.

The mother accused Qassimi Hospital of committing a serious medical error and said she would sue the hospital and all doctors involved.

Alittihad quoted Qassimi Hospital deputy director Dr Abdul Wahid Al Wihdawi as saying the hospital had performed nearly 300 such operations and that there were complications only in five cases.

“Four of them are still receiving treatment for the complications….Samah is the first patient to die of such complications,” he said.

“Her relatives have the right to file a legal case for her death…the law will guarantee their rights but we, as doctors, did our duty towards this case.”
