Abu Dhabi traffic police punished more than 45,000 motorists in 2010 for failing to fasten the seat belt while driving, a senior police officer was reported on Wednesday as saying.

The police also issued nearly 48,000 tickets to drivers for blocking traffic on main roads while 32,000 drivers were penalised for offending rules pertaining to their car tires.

“Among the main road offences last year are those related to failure to fasten the seat belts….such offences totaled 45,992,” said Brigadier Hussein Al Harthi, director of the traffic patrols department at the Abu Dhabi traffic police.

“We urge all drivers to abide by traffic rules to ensure road safety and protect themselves against accidents, which sometimes result in serious injuries and deaths,” he told the Arabic language daily 'Al Bayan'.
