Morning fog in Dubai: Avoid crashes & chaos

Motorists are advised to be extra cautious while driving in foggy weather and are advised not to drive at all in extreme fog, said Lieutenant Omran Abdullah, media spokesperson for Dubai Police's Traffic Department.

“Especially in the morning when the sun has not yet come up it is dangerous to drive. Long distances should be avoided and in case of extreme fog it is better to stop driving,” he said.

Motorists should also reduce their speed, keep more-than-normal distance from other motorists, drive with low lights on and use wipers to increase visibility, he advised.

Fog creates the illusion of driving slow while you may actually be speeding, points out the online Weather Channel in a list of advices for driving in fog.

“High beams will only be reflected back off the fog and actually impair visibility even more,” is added.

“Listen for traffic you cannot see. Open your window a little, to hear better,” is another advise.

“It is also recommended not to change lanes. Drivers should stay in their own lane, this is safer,” says Lt Abdullah.

On an extreme foggy day last year –October 18- 36 vehicles were involved in an accident and 16 people were injured.
