Within the scope of the initiatives of Dubai Municipality's Public Parks and Horticulture Department to achieve its strategic goals of maintaining a healthy environment from harmful insects, the department is instigating a simple method to get rid of mosquitoes in farms and houses.

Taleb Abdul Karim Julfar, Director of Public Parks and Horticulture, explained that the idea is to place a simple device made of household materials easily available to all and without using any harmful chemical pesticides that can affect both human health and the environment.

"Officials in the agricultural services section discovered this method where they designed a trap from simple items which can be put into practice by any person at home.

“The idea is to create a mixture that produces carbon dioxide safely using the interaction of sugar and yeast, which attracts mosquitoes and some other insects," Taleb said.

"The device utilises an empty 1.5-2 litre PET water or soda bottle which is re-purposed to form a funnel trap into which a mix of household products is placed to attract insects.

The trap is then wrapped in a black plastic bag to re-produce a warm and dark environment that mosquitoes like for breeding," he said.

He hoped each and every farm owner and house in the emirate would test this simple idea and give feedback and suggestions to the department.

Taleb honoured Nabeel bin Haider, Head of Horticulture Services Section, Munir Hasan Ghaith, Senior Horticulture Specialist and Nasim Abdul Malik Al Naqib, Chemical Analyst, who contributed with him to devise this method, in order to encourage excellence and innovation in the workplace.
