It was thunderstorms and cold winds that welcomed UAE residents these past three days, with the wet weather expected to continue over the next two days, covering the northern and eastern parts of the country.

A rare possibility of snow is also being predicted by the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology, with temperatures dropping as low as 10 degree Celsius in UAE-Oman mountain range.

“The dipping temperature in the upper atmosphere could also bring snow to those parts, mainly up in the mountains,” A spokesperson from NCMS told Emirates 24|7. “However, the mercury is unlikely to drop below 10 degrees Celisus.”

The spokesperson explained: “This is low pressure weather that has swept in from the Mediterranean, bringing this instability to the Gulf.

“The brunt was borne by Saudi Arabia, with the flooding in Riyadh with the record rainfall, and the waterspout in Qatar.

“But chances of either one of those conditions hitting the UAE are extremely rare, especially for something that even closely resembles a tornado.”

However, this doesn’t rule out thunderstorms that have lashed Fujairah, Hamra, Masafi and Dibba these past few days, with light rainfall in parts of Dubai.

“This unstable weather brought clouds with heavy precipitation that resulted in the heavy rainfall these past four days in the UAE, especially Masafi which recorded the highest rainfall at 78.3mm,” he said.

The thunderstorms also played havoc in Fujairah, causing a temporary power outage in the emirate a few days ago, while causing flooding in the city streets.

This morning, the Arabian Gulf waters recorded waves measuring 12 feet high, with thunderstorms at sea resulting in warnings for fishermen and those living in coastal areas.
