Ten cats per week for the next couple of ten weeks will be neutered or spayed for free in Al Barsha Veterinary Clinic.
That is a hundred cats. It may not be quite enough to reduce the swelling stray cat population in Dubai, but it is a push in the right direction, and available for anybody who understands the significance of the deed.
“Dubai is suffering from a rapidly increasing cat population. It is difficult to solve this problem, but every party does something to give a helping hand. As such, we offer feline castrates or spays free of charge,” said Wilma Frietman, manager at Al Barsha Veterinary Clinic.
Sterilisation has by many been suggested as the best way to reduce the stray cat overflow in the emirate, with an estimated cut back of a quarter of the population over a couple of generations.
“The more you feed, the more they breed, so making sure they get sterilised is a must or the problem will only get bigger,” suggested Lesley Muney of Feline Friends Dubai earlier.
However, not any random stranger is willing to pick up a cat in the community one day and offer to pay for the operation. Although people would like to help, reaching the own pocket may be a hurdle.
“We have a special campaign for one month every year in order to encourage people to bring in stray cats, and we offer special rates for charity organisations.
“But this year is a special occasion, because we are celebrating our 10-year-anniversary,” said Wilma.
“That is why we are offering the service free-of-charge for 10 weeks long.”
Every week, one day will be selected for 10 cats to be castrated or spayed. Interested people should make an appointment well in time, noted Wilma, who expects that the service will be popular among the local community.
The campaign will start on October 10, and last until December.
