A new tariff system for the consumption of electricity and water has been levied on commercial and industrial entities in Sharjah, said a top official adding that this excludes the residential sector.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, Dr. Rashid Obaid Jumaa Al Leem, Chairman of Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa), said they have started applying the new system based on consumption.

Dr. Al Leem explained this move comes in accordance with the decision of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) and some other electricity and water authorities in the country, which has started to review and increase the tariff for electricity and water consumption segments.

He stressed that this move aims to take all measures to ensure the optimum use of energy and water.

“The application of the new segments of consumption system on commercial and industrial sectors have come after a careful study to ensure that this increase will only be applied on the segments that consume large quantities that exceeds normal consumption. Such procedure primarily aims at reducing waste of energy and water.”

He added that the new tariff system will not have a negative impact on the competitiveness of the commercial and industrial sectors in Sharjah.  “Sewa has adopted the new segment system, which is embraced by Fewa for commercial and industrial sectors,” Dr. Al Leem said.

He added: “The new tariff for water consumption is 3.5 fils for 10,000 gallons consumption, and 4 fils for consumption of between 10,000 and 20,000 gallons. It will go up to 4.6 fils for consumption of more than 20 000 gallons per month.”

Dr. Al Leem said electricity and water tariffs for the residential sector did not change.

“The electricity tariffs for national residents is 7.5 fils for each k/w and is 1.5 fils for each gallon of water. As for expatriates, it is 30 fils for each k/w of electricity and 3 fils for each gallon of water,” he added.

He added that the tariff for consumption of water and electricity in Sharjah is very competitive and less compared to local or global prices. “Sharjah is the second emirate after Abu Dhabi in offering cheap tariffs for electricity and water.”

He pointed out that Sewa has developed a strategic plan to reduce erroneous behaviour in the consumption of energy and water by instilling a culture of conservation among various community groups, especially among school students, housewives and maids.

He asserted that reviewing water and electricity tariffs is one of the means to ensure the optimal use of these vital resources.
