If you’re driving on an Abu Dhabi road and the signal turns red with the sirens of civil defence vehicles being heard nearby, then you shouldn’t be surprised. As matter of fact, you must put breaks and slow down the vehicle because the priority will be given to the civil defence vehicles at the signal or junction.

On Wednesday, Abu Dhabi Civil Defence announced a new advanced traffic light control system in cooperation with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport whereby the civil defence vehicles will be given priority to pass at the signal or junctions.

New system would not disturb the traffic flow and pedestrians. The new system was tested extensively on six intersections in Abu Dhabi under various scenarios to ensure effectiveness of the system. The results were quite positive and successful, said a statement.

Colonel Mohammed Abdul Jalil Ansari, Director-General of Civil Defence in Abu Dhabi, said the new technology is used for the first time in the Middle East.

“New technology,” he revealed, “makes it easier for the civil defence vehicles to cross junctions without blocking traffic on the routes and it prevents accidents also. This will also contribute to reducing response time and quicker access to the accident site for the fire brigades and ambulances.”

He emphasised that the Civil Defence Department maintains latest technologies and state-of-the-art equipment to cope up with the different challenges such as a fire-fighting, accidents and other rescue operations.
