New UAE deadline for mobile SIM registration: Jan 2013

Mobile service provider du has clarified that they have extended the deadline for SIM card registration to January 17, 2013.

They have scrapped their earlier announced October 16 deadline and have stuck to the new, three-month grace period offered by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

“We are pleased to extend the registration period for the first batch of our customers which was supposed to expire on October16, by a period of three months until January 17, 2013,” read their official statement.

This is in sync with the TRA’s decision to extend the deadline for My Number My Identity campaign by three months.

“We believe an extended time frame will enable all those customers in the first batch who have been invited but not yet done so to register their lines,” it added.

The service provider claimed that they have informed their customers of the new deadline, and have advised them to proceed for the registration only after receiving the SMS notification.

The confusion over the deadline extension kicked-off after du set an October 16 deadline for their first batch of customers, even when the TRA had extended it the deadline by three months.

“Although I received a SMS stating that I need to register by today, I did read that the TRA had extended the deadline. So I didn’t know what to follow?” asked a puzzled customer.

Some customers, however, were unwilling to take a chance and rushed to du centers to ensure their numbers were not blocked.

“I couldn’t risk losing my number and wait until an official clarification came about,” voiced another customer. “I would have to register at some point in time, so why not now?”
