According to statistics released by the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), 1.45 million commuters used public transport on December 31, 2012, with the Dubai Metro recording 587,542 passengers.

“This is a record number of commuters since its launch in 2009,” the statement said.

Burj Khalifa Dubai Mall station, Business Bay station and Financial Center station accounted for the highest number of commuters, as these stations combined served 506,813 passengers.

A total of 322,066 passengers took buses, while 40,000 people used marine transport.

The RTA team responsible for managing traffic movement and handling operational plans during official and annual events, in cooperation with the General HQ of Dubai Police, and Emaar Company, had worked out a comprehensive traffic plan to streamline the movement of vehicles and public transit means on New Year’s Eve.

The plan was in place especially to streamline traffic towards and from Downtown Dubai.

The Metro was running round-the-clock, so also feeder buses. Parking lots were also increased to accommodate revellers.
