No grace speed in Abu Dhabi in two years

Abu Dhabi is planning to abolish a grace speed limit given to drivers within two years as part of a project to restructure the traffic system to improve safety, the head of the traffic police was reported on Wednesday as saying.

Under the new system, drivers must fully abide by the speed limit on the roads within the emirate and on motorways, said Brigadier Hussein al Harithi.

“The grace speed given to all vehicles will be annulled within two years in line with a new strategy to manage speed on the roads,” he told Emirat Alyoum daily.

“This decision is designed to develop a safe traffic system on the emirate’s internal and external roads.”

The present system allows motorists to exceed the speed limit by between 10 and 20 km on various roads in the emirate, which modified speed limits on its roads at the start of this year as part of ongoing restructuring plans with the aim of curbing accidents caused mainly by excess speed and other offences.

“Annulling that grace speed means all drivers must adhere to the speed limit shown on the signboards installed on roads……..we will set all the traffic cameras on the roads according to the limit shown on those boards without giving any grace,” Harithi said.
