No hike for 2 years in Dubai electricity rates

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has assured residents that it’s not going to increase rates for electrify this year and till the end of next year.

Saeed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dewa, said that there is no plan to increase the electricity rates in the emirate of Dubai this year till the end of next year, according to Al Royya Arabic daily newspaper.

“There is no tie-up between the decline in oil prices and the electricity generation, especially because Dubai is in long terms agreements with the suppliers and producers.”

He pointed out that Dewa is constantly working hard to get the best rates for both the electricity suppliers and the consumers.

“Dewa lately succeeded in lowering the rates of producing one unit of power from 5.9 fils to 5.8 fils. And we expect the cost of producing electricity will further decrease in the near future.”

He added that Dubai is planning to pump more than Dh50 billion to transform Dubai into a smart city by the year 2030.

He added that Dubai is currently producing 200 megawatt of clean energy after announcing the Dh1.2 billion project.

“We have the finance, and we have no problems with Dubai debts which are related to energy projects. And our total debts does not exceed 0.2 per cent of the total capital of Dubai’s energy projects.”

He added that currently, Dewa has more than 700,000 clients, and we have achieved 94 per cent of customer satisfaction and this is one of the highest rates not only regionally, but also internationally.
