The Ministry of Labour has said that expatriate workers who have been absconding for more than a year will not be considered for pardon and will have to exit the country.

While the ministry if open to making exemptions to the rule if absconders for shorter durations plead their cases before the labour committee, no such relief will be available to those who have stayed illegally for a year or more.

The committee will consider pleas for relaxation of the norm if the period of absconding is up to three months.

While the penalty for not reporting such cases in time was Dh10,000 in the previous law, the amended version that comes into force on January 1, 2011, has halved the fine to Dh5,000. The onus of reporting absconders to the authorities is entirely on the employers.

On the other hand, the ministry will fine any employer found to be guilty of making false charges against its employers.

The issue came up at a weekly meeting of the committee that was chaired by Humaid bin Dimas Al Suwaidi, undersecretary with the ministry.
